I’m glad
I stumbled across the daily writing challenge,
River of Stones , set by Fiona Robyn and Kaspalita
Thompson in their blog Writing Our WayHome.
The challenge was to create small stones for
every day of January. A small stone is a very short piece of
writing that precisely captures a fully-engaged moment. The theory is great –
you pay attention to the world around you and produce a short piece of observational
writing.
After the
disruptions of moving house and acquiring a puppy I was finding it difficult to
settle back down to editing my first novel and the challenge of writing
something every day worked as a warm-up for me and really helped increase my
productivity. It was also an enjoyable experience. It gave me permission to
leave the novel for a short time and try some different writing, and it introduced
me to some great writing blogs.
Looking back over
my month’s efforts I feel that I was sometimes a bit too ‘fully-engaged’ in
myself and my feelings rather than the world around me, but I’m not going to
get hung-up about that. What was important to me was that I was writing, and I
even like some of the stuff I produced!
